Building Self Esteem

Do you feel lonely or depressed? Do you feel like the world has turned on you? Many people feel this way. It is sad, but true - even the “best of us” can have low self esteem at times.

Building self esteem begins with you believing that you can do something about it. You need to recognize which aspects in your life are hurting your self esteem and start to target these harmful things in your life. You need to start to take steps to change the sources of “self esteem killers” in your life. Just small changes in how you perceive yourself makes a huge change in how you life your life.

Many people try to compare their worst achievement with other’s best achievements. Don’t do this. Remember that each individual person has different strengths and weaknesses. One person who might be great at writing might not be as good at drawing. Everyone can do something really well - it’s just often hard to identify what it is you’re good at.

To start building self esteem, follow these 4 simple steps…

First, isolate the aspects of your life that are causing the low self-esteem. Write them all down on a list. Everything that hurts you, has hurt you or that could be a source of stress in the future. Spend at least an hour doing this. You need this to make a positive change in your life.

Second, start narrowing down the sources of stress. Is it people? Perhaps you need to start making new, more positive friends. Is it your job? Maybe you need to consider finding a new job. Even if it pays well, stress can hurt your body both physically and psychologically and shorten your life. No amount of money is worth a shorter life, right?

Third, realize that failures are a part of life. However, learning from your failures is one of the most important parts to building self esteem. Never see yourself as a failure just because you failed at something - learn from the experience. What did you do wrong? How can you do better next time? View it in a positive light. It is possible.

Last, list down all of your positive traits. Tell yourself everything you’re good at, everything you can do, and how much potential you have. Don’t be modest here…this is very important! Once you’re done, tape up this list on your fridge or next to your computer. It’s easy and it works great!
